Especially if the idea is to make a new Unreal Tournament that captures people just like the original did back in 1999. While no word was given on the title he's attached to, his expertise seems like it would fit well within Unreal Tournament. There was also recent news that Respawn co-founder Jason West was now at Epic games. It seems there might be some merit to Epic just waiting for the right time to go back into it. But with the game still downloadable and playable in some form. When Tim Sweeney said that Unreal Tournament would be put on Hiatus, he easily could've just said cancelled instead.

However, the title has been put on hiatus and the last update it received was back in 2017.ĭespite that bleak outlook, there is some hope. Unreal Tournament Pre-Alpha is the only Unreal Tournament title currently on EGS and from the stores own page states just how early it is -Ĭlick to shrink.Being able to play and have input into a early title like this is great. I of course have to touch upon Unreal Tournament Pre-Alpha as well.

It isn't like Epic forgets they own these titles either, recently for the 20th anniversary they gave away Unreal Gold for free on both GoG and Steam. A simple gesture such as adding classic titles, goes a long way in speaking to consumers and fans (Such as those still talking about the game on r/UnrealTournament).
However, the fact that Epic hasn't even been bothered to include their classic titles on their own store, titles that made the company what they are today speaks volumes. Saying Epic needed a new Unreal to launch the Epic Game Store is a bit too far (They're currently still working out a lot of features on the service). But that popularity if anything, shows how detached they are from their roots. It is immensely popular after-all, regardless of what platform you play on.
We can cut Epic some slack and say they more or less figure Fortnite is that game for them. While such a push at the time was divisive (much like EGS itself currently is), I think it can be agreed that the push was a large part in what drove steam to success as the years went on (Kotaku commented about this in their 10 year anniversary article here).
With all of that taken into account, it really sticks out how the series is currently on hiatus while Epic tries to push EGS.īack when Valve launched Steam, they made it mandatory for Half-Life 2. Then you have Unreal Engine which is currently one of the most used engines in game development, regardless of the region a game is being developed. The original Unreal pushed a new age of PC gaming (LGR has a retrospective here) with its at the time next-gen graphics and Unreal Tournament (along with Quake 3) pushed a new era of MP gaming. The Unreal series (both the game and engine) are very important pieces of gaming's history & future.
